Julia Biryukova told detectives that on Sunday 11/6/2011, she and her two children, four-year- old Maile and two-year-old Sky were heading to the Overlake Hospital Medical Center when she ran out of gas. She and Maile walked about a mile to a gas station leaving Sky alone in the unlocked car. She had then called a friend to pick them up from the gas station and about an hour later, when they returned to her car, they discovered that the toddler was missing.
Investigation
Detectives claim that after removing the car’s gas tank, they found plenty of gas still inside and furthermore, Biryukova had not bought any gas at the gas station that she visited. “The story doesn’t add up, the whereabouts of Sky are unknown, the mother’s story is falling apart, day to day.” said Maj. Mike Johnson of the Bellevue Police Department. “We have been challenged to try to find evidence and facts to support Julia’s story…we want to believe Julia, we want to help her find her missing child and we want her cooperation to do that. And at this point, the information she has given us has been problematic and has created more questions than answers,” Johnson stated. Although Biryukova has refused to take a polygraph test, her husband, Solomon Metalwala has agreed to be tested.
History
Biryukova and her husband, Solomon have been involved in a bitter divorce and custody battle. According to the Associated Press, divorce papers state Biryukova had “severe” obsessive-compulsive disorder accompanied by 10-hour cleaning binges during which she would neglect her children. However, a doctor testified that she was still able to care for her kids. In 2009, both parents were charged with reckless endangerment for leaving Sky alone in a parked car at a Target parking lot. Court records show they completed court-ordered parenting courses following the incident.
Sky Metalwala has brown eyes and dark buzz-cut hair. He is half Indian and half Caucasian and was last seen wearing a dark green hooded sweatshirt and blue and gray striped Carter’s pants. Anyone who sees a child matching this description is asked to call 911 immediately.
