Amy Lynn Bradley was vacationing with her parents and her brother on board the cruise ship “Rhapsody of the Seas.” The ship had just left Oranjestad, Aruba and was heading to Curacao, Antilles on March 24th, 1998, when Amy was reported missing. Shortly after the ship docked in Curacao, authorities conducted an extensive search of the ship but Amy had simply vanished.
Investigation
Amy was last seen by a family member, at approximately 5:30a.m., sitting barefoot on the balcony outside their ship’s cabin. A short time later, she was spotted by 2 passengers on the ship in the company of a ship’s band member, Alister Douglas. According to news sources, Douglas stated that Amy had joined band members for a drink at the ship’s dance club after the band’s performance and he and Amy parted company about 1 a.m.. Investigators searched Alister’s and his band members’ rooms, but nothing was found.
Sightings
Although no one saw her leaving the ship, there have been numerous sightings of Amy in Curacao. A local cab driver had reported that Amy approached his cab on the morning of her disappearance and said she needed to get to a telephone. A retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer also reported seeing Amy in Curacao. While at a brothel, Amy had stated her name and asked him for help. He had informed her that there was a Navy ship five minutes from the brothel, but did not report the incident to authorities immediately, fearing that the Navy would take action against him for visiting a brothel. He waited until his retirement. The most intriguing lead came from David Carmichael, a 46-year-old Canadian computer engineer and avid scuba diver. He claims that he saw Amy with two men on the beach in Curacao in August 1998. “She looked frightened and she was about to say something, when one of the guys motioned her away and gave me a menacing look.” At the time, Carmichael was not aware of Amy’s plight and therefore, did not contact authorities. Approximately nine months later, while watching a television program, David Carmichael made the connection. “I saw the segment on Unsolved Mysteries. The minute I saw her picture and saw her face, I realized that was the girl on the beach.” Through out the years there have been many leads but Amy’s whereabouts still remain a mystery. According to FBI special agent James Weber, “we’ve pursed every angle, from whether there was foul play, a suicide or an accident and we have basically not gotten anywhere.”
At the time of her disappearance, Amy, an American citizen, was 24 years old, was 5’7″ tall, weighed 120 pounds and had short brown hair and green eyes. Amy had several tattoos: a Tasmanian Devil spinning a basketball on her shoulder blade; the sun, on her lower back; a Chinese symbol, on her right ankle and a green gecko lizard, around her navel.
