The discovery of 10 bodies along a remote part of Long Island coastline, have led New York police to the conclusion that they are dealing with a serial killer.
Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey prostitute, whose disappearance prompted the search of the Gilgo Beach area, which ultimately led to the gruesome discoveries in December 2010, remains missing. According to police, although the circumstances of Gilbert’s disappearance do not match those of the other victims, they believe, that she is likely dead. The search for Gilbert continues.
Originally, four bodies were found in this area and authorities were led to believe that this was the work of a serial killer but when the remaining six were uncovered in early April, officials stated that multiple killers were involved and that they were using the same area as a dumping ground. However, detectives now believe that one person is responsible for all 10 deaths. Out of the ten victims, who are described as eight females, a male and female toddler, police have identified five and have disclosed that they were all women, who worked as escorts. The remains of the male, an Asian, has yet to be identified but officials believe that he was also a prostitute. DNA results have confirmed that the toddler is the child of one of the unidentified females.
The police department’s belief that the victims were somehow involved in the sex trade and the fact that all victims were found dismembered and in the same general area, has led officials to theorize that this is the work of a serial killer.
There is a reward of $25,000 offered for information leading to an arrest in this case.
